Two Big Questions that Need to be Answered in Your Life
21 and as they were eating, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall [a]betray me. 22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began to say unto him every one, Is it I, Lord? 25 And Judas, who [e]betrayed him, answered and said, Is it I, Rabbi? He saith unto him, Thou hast said.
How you see God (Jesus and Holy Spirit included) determines how you will respond to Him in your life. That in turn, will determine who God will become to you. One well-known minister of the gospel talks frequently about, “Who do you want God to be for you?” and “Who does God want to be for you in your life?” At first that may seem like New Age lingo. After all, the Word says God never changes, and that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. But it is also true that God can only be to you Who you allow Him to be.
The scripture above reveals how important it is to answer the question, “Who do you want God to be for you?” In this passage Jesus has revealed that one of the disciples was going to betray Him. Note that it says they were all upset and “began to say unto him everyone, is it I, Lord? And Judas…said, Is it I, Rabbi?” This passage is very telling. When each of the disciples asked if it was him, each addressed Jesus as “Lord.” Judas, however, addressed Him as “Rabbi” (which means teacher). Jesus was someone different to Judas than He was to the other disciples and it made all the difference in the world. The sad thing is that Jesus would have been Lord to Judas if only Judas had received Him as such.
Before you answer “Who do you want God to be for you?” it would be wise to find out “Who God wants to be for you in your life.” Chances are if you don’t do that, your expectations will fall short. The Lord has many names/titles that give us insight as to who He wants to be for us; Jehovah Rohi – the Lord our shepherd, Jehovah Jirah – the Lord our provider; Jehovah Rapha – the Lord our Healer, to name just a few. But it is the name before each titleJ – Jehovah or Yahweh – that perhaps summarizes who the Lord most wants to be in our lives. The titles – Rohi, Jirah, Rapha,- tell us what He does. Yahweh tell us who He is. Yahweh is the God of relationships. The name reveals God’s heart toward His people. In Exodus 3 God tells Moses to tell the people that He is “I AM that I AM.” He seems to be reiterating who He by repeating Himself. However, if we take that phrase and place the emphasis on “that,” a different picture emerges. God is basically saying that He is whoever we need Him to be. I AM “that” I AM. Each of God’s different titles/names is connected to His desire to take care of whatever situation you are facing.
Receiving who God wants to be for you is ultimately dependent on your understanding of who Yahweh is. Without relationship with God through fellowship and intimacy you will never really be able to receive all He wants to give you. When you know Yahweh first, you open the door to receiving all that each of His names encompasses!
